La Escuelita San Alban is a bilingual preschool located in Davidson, North Carolina. Given the increasing enrollment of Spanish-speaking children in U.S. schools yet the fact that dual-language learning children from low-income families are less prepared for kindergarten, we wanted to survey parents and teachers of former La Escuelita students to measure the effectiveness of La Escuelita on kindergarten preparation and where gaps existed for Spanish-speaking children. We developed a survey for the current kindergarten teachers of the former La Escuelita students and conducted interviews with parents of the former La Escuelita students through WhatsApp. Given the extremely small target population and resulting sample size, we chose to treat the survey responses more as case studies and performed a qualitative, in-depth analysis to hopefully understand how the preschool has impacted the young Spanish-speaking students’ educational experiences.
