Culminating in a proposal for change to the Free Clinic at Ada Jenkins Medical Center, this research project considers the intersections of healthcare policy, language barriers in medical settings, and the challenges that recently arrived immigrants from Latin America face when navigating the medical system in the United States. This proposal for change is rooted in these relevant research topics, as well as personal reflection from my own experiences as a non-native Spanish speaker and volunteer at the Free Clinic, and conversations with the interpretation coordinators. I recommend a two-part proposal for change that includes a more comprehensive interpreter volunteer intake program and a rigorous volunteer training program. Both elements combined will hopefully lead to more prepared and confident volunteers who can provide improved health care services to Spanish speaking clients.
